How to identify the CRS of your CAD file?

Do you want to upload a CAD site to RatedPower but don't know the CRS? Don't worry, this article will help you!

It's very common to receive a CAD file "DWG" or "DXF" from your clients, where you then need to create the solar layout in those boundaries. In RatedPower you have the option to upload your site boundary as a AutoCAD file "DWG", but the file will need to be georeferenced.

In some cases you will be able to find the CRS of the file simply by enabling the "GIS Coordinates" and checking the information in the bottom. If your DWG file has this, then you can straightforward upload it to RatedPower.

If your DWG file does not show any information with regards to the GIS coordinates, then you will need to ask your client or entity that provided you with the CAD file to tell you which CRS the file has. Or you can use this other approach:

  1. Open the EPSG website: https://epsg.io/
  2. Type the country of the project location.
  3. Click "Get position on a map" for all the options on the first page list.

  4. On the new page that will open, do your best to center the exact location of the project, and take note of the "X" and "Y" coordinate values that will be shown.

  5. Open the AutoCAD site and compare if the "X" and "Y" coordinate values are as close as possible to the ones from the EPSG website. Usually a good indicator is if they:
    1. Have the same quantity of numbers.
    2. Start with the same numbers.

  6. Once you have a good approximation, you can look at the EPSG value shown in the bottom, and copy that code.

  7. Past the same value in the search bar for the CAD import in RatedPower, choose the option from the list and click select.

  8. Check if it will match the location. In case it doesn't, then you will need to check again the EPSG website and try a different code.

In some very few cases, it is possible that the CAD site was not georeferenced from the beginning, meaning, the "X" and "Y" coordinates are not associated to any EPSG. Unfortunately uploading this type of file will not work, as you will still need to choose a EPSG from the list.

Choosing a random code will also place the site in a random location, with the possibility of having wrong dimensions. Please refer to your GIS partner to have the file georeferenced, and to provide you with the EPSG code.
